This Interior Design program is designed for those who have a Bachelor’s degree in a design/construction field and those who have a Bachelor’s degree in other disciplines. It is for candidates who have a desire to be an Interior designer but did not have the opportunity to do so at an undergraduate level.

This programme is a Professional Masters. This means it is designed for working professionals. The course has two tracks: the hybrid and fully online tracks.

The programme is delivered to international standards. It is designed to prepare the students for international practice as well as local practice. Courses are taught by experts from Africa, USA and the Middle East.

Entry Requirements

A student is considered Hybrid’ if the student resides inside Nigeria; irrespective of nationality. 

A student is considered International’ if the student resides outside Nigeria; irrespective of nationality. International students can only select the Online Mode of the program.

This project challenges the students skills in branding, lighting, and materials and universal design in a commercial project.

This course will also provide an opportunity for collaborative work and emphasize the local context in design considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anyone interested persons with a Masters, Bachelors or Higher National Diploma in Architecture, Building, Quantity Surveying, Estate MAnagement, Urban Planning and Fine Arts OR any other discipline but with three or more years in Interior Design Practice.

The program is for Nigerians or any other Nationality. It is also designed for working professionals.

The programme is a full-time programme. It is not a part-time programme. So it is expected that the student will put in the required amount of time to succeed.

The programme is NOT a part-time programme. It is intense. In addition to the meeting times, a student will need to devote about an extra 18-20 hours weekly for assignments or studio work. Every online class will have a practical content or an assignment which will be usually due within a week.

We assess design background using the student’s transcript. Design background means the applicant has done at least one design related course at an undergraduate level.
A student without any design background would be required to have relevant work experience in a design related organization for at least 3years after graduation to qualify for admission.

Two status exist: Hybrid students and International students
A student is considered ‘International’ if the student resides outside Nigeria; irrespective of nationality.
International students can only select the online mode of the program.
A student is considered ‘Hybrid’ if the student resides inside Nigeria; irrespective of nationality.

For Hybrid mode students, the face-face meetings will be held in Lagos mainland (and in Abuja if the number of students in Abuja is more than ten). The venue will be communicated to all admitted students.

The normal deadline for admission is 30th November every year. There are limited spaces; so it is important to apply as soon as possible. The deadline will only be extended if there are spaces left.

The Instalments Payment Plan allows a student to pay the semester’s tuition in three (3) installments as detailed in the DEADLINES FOR PAYMENT in the tuition and fees section.

If successful, the student will be awarded a Masters’ certificate of the Obafemi Awolowo University. The certificate will read ‘Master of Interior Design, Obafemi Awolowo University’. The degree you receive will be identical to one earned in a face-face program.

Dolapo Amole (Prof)

Dolapo Amole is the main coordinator of the programme. She is a professor of Architecture with over 30 years teaching experience. She is also an experienced facilitator, curriculum developer and designer.  She teaches the interior design process, introduction to interior design, universal design for interiors and  codes and regulations in interior design process.

Iyabode Adediran

Iyabode Adediran in an architect and interior designer. She is a certified Interior designer. She is a lecturer in The Department of Architecture, OAU, Nigeria where she teaches Interior Design. She teaches Interior Design Studio, Furnishing and the Design Process in this program

Olufunsho Ogundipe

'Funsho Ogundipe (Msc. Architecture, FUTA, Akure, Nigeria) is a the Administrative Coordinator for the Interior Design program.  She also teaches Furniture Basics in this program

Dorothy van’t Riet is the Founder and Principal Designer of Dorothy van’t Riet Design & Décor Consultants (DVR) & has run her own Interior Design firm for 30 years both locally in South Africa & internationally. Dorothy has done many projects in Nigeria including the full interior design & décor of Four Points by Sheraton in Lagos & Lakowe Lakes Corporate Lodge.

Her South African and International Awards include:

Abimbola Asojo (Prof)

Professor Abimbola Asojo is a professor of Interior Design. Her teaching areas are architectural lighting design; design and human factors; computing and design; corporate design; and commercial design. She actively engages her students in community based service-learning projects that tackle local and global societal challenges.

She is currently the Dean, Morgan State University’s School of Architecture and Planning,

With a background in architecture and a passion for integrating cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) in interior design, he teaches software in this program

Bode Orola (Ph.D)

Dr Bode Orola is an architect who specializes in Architectural Science. He has over 10 years experience of teaching. He teaches in this program, Acoustics in Interior Spaces. 

Tina Patel

Patel, was nominated by 2021 IIDA Educator Diversity Award winner, Associate Professor and Director of the School of Interior Architecture at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Her studios expose students of all age groups to designing with empathy with a special focus on neurodivergent users.

She taught Professional Practice in this program.

Tina Patel is Assistant Professor in the Interior Design program of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, at Kent State University. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from India and her MA and MFA in Interior Design from Iowa State University. She has held academic positions of Professor at Algonquin College, Ottawa; Teaching Specialist in Interior Design at University of Minnesota, Instructor and Coordinator of Interior Design Program at South Dakota State University. Prior to teaching, Tina worked at Callison RTKL, Washington DC and Baltimore offices, SVPA Architects, West Des Moines and Solomon Cordwell Buenz, Chicago. 

Her work examines the intersection of people, processes and the built environment. She has presented at national and international conferences and has published her research on learning environments for neurodiversity and underrepresented groups, impact of evolving workplaces on behavior and design pedagogy. Tina has established partnership with community leaders, non-profits and design practices dedicated to empowering communities to expand on teaching methodologies centered on community engagement. Her community engaged pedagogy aims to sharpen students understanding of others with different realities and unfamiliar experiences by utilizing current and on-going social and economic issues affecting our communities.

Seun Akinyemi

Seun Akinyemi is an practicing architect and a passionate teacher. He trains students on building construction techniques and skills. He focuses oon building construction innovations. He is a highly innovative builder.

Eva Oamen

Eva Osobase Oamen is a practising Interior Designer in Texas US,

Eva graduated from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in Interior Design. She has more than twenty years experience as an interior designer in the United States and Nigeria. Her focus is on corporate design and offices. In this course she shares the design process with the students.

Henry Banye

Henry Banye is the founder and CEO of Corazon Creatives. He loves to design and create. He is an Architect and Project Manager. He specializes in bathrooms and Kitchens. He taught the students Bathrooms and Kitchen Design. 

Andrea Sosa Fontaine

Andrea Sosa Fontaine is a maker and design educator. She has extensive project experience as a Commercial Interior Designer throughout North America, with work including education, workplace, and healthcare projects. In her creative work, she explores bespoke shoemaking Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Interior Design at Kent State University, focusing on Interior Design studios and Professional Practice. Andrea teaches her students diverse and non-linear methods of design through interdisciplinary translations of interior space. Her research has focused on modifications to the practices of design to foster equity and respect for future memory in the built environment.

Yakubu Aminu Dodo

Yakubu Aminu Dodo  is an Assistant Professor at Najran University Saudi Arabia was also a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti of Sains Islam Malaysia, and Istambul Gelsim University Turkey.

He has taught furniture design in some universities and had a furniture factory some years back.

He is teaching furniture design in this programme.

John Okpako

John OKPAKO is a passionate landscape designer and teacher. He holds a Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Architecture from the Department of Architecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University, where he also teaches.

He loves nurturing and adorning places with plants. His teaching, research and publication interests are in the area of landscape Architecture and Architectural history, He researches, teaches and practices Landscape Architecture.

Interior designers work with companies or individual clients to help design and decorate residential and commercial spaces.

Work in retail stores to sell products to customers. They use strong communication and customer service skills and be knowledgeable of the company’s products.

Merchandisers Designers are responsible for the physical layout of products in a store. They use market research, psychology and brand aesthetics to place objects, decor and signage in commercial spaces.

Are responsible for the visual elements of a theater, film or television. They consult on lighting, camera angles, props, costumes and locations.

Also called florists, create bouquets and other displays using fresh and artificial flowers and plants. They design pieces for individuals, organizations and special events.

They work with design software to create images, logos and other visual arts for organizations. They may design advertisements, websites, direct mail pieces and billboards.

They create clothing, shoes and accessories for fashion houses and other brands. They source fabrics and other materials, sew pieces, participate in fashion shows and work with models and influencers to increase brand awareness.

Lighting consultants design lighting installations for residential and commercial spaces. They may work with interior design firms, architects and real estate developers. Lighting consultants are familiar with electrical installation, building codes and different types of lighting solutions.

Kitchen and bath designers design functional, compliant kitchens and bathrooms for residential and commercial locations. They are knowledgeable in building codes, basic contracting and plumbing and working within a budget

Design consultants often work with retailers, fashion designers and interior design firms. Their responsibilities include advising on product development, such as furniture and home decor lines, and residential and commercial design.

The Master of Interior Design programme is aimed at producing industry-ready interior design professionals. It is a professional Masters. The programme will develop knowledge and professional skills in the design, spatial planning, colour, lighting, materials and technology, and adaptive re-use of interior spaces for a variety of interior spaces and building types. The programme is highly practical and it is designed for persons seeking to fulfil a lifelong dream of becoming interior design professionals.

It is expected that at the end of the programme, you will demonstrate a rich comprehension of the history, design, theories, procedures, ethics and issues in the design and construction of a variety of interior spaces. 

You will also possess the ability to identify key problems in interiors and apply knowledge learnt in the programme to design and create interior spaces for human performance and wellbeing. 

Finally, you will demonstrate professionalism in all issues associated with the design of interior environments and be able to work independently and in teams.

Local accrediting organizations do not yet exist, but the programme is known to the Interior Association of Nigeria (IDAN). The process for accreditation with CIDA (Council of Interior Design Association) would begin in a few years. 

There are two delivery modes: the HYBRID mode and the ONLINE mode.

An Applicant for admission to the programme must have satisfied relevant general admission requirements of the University with evidence of an NYSC Certificate and shall be:

  1. a graduate of a recognized university with degrees in Architecture or any discipline in the Environmental Design and Management fields, or
  2. a graduate of a recognized university with degrees in any disciplines, but with at least 3 years post qualification experience in a design firm.
  3. an HND graduate from a recognized Nigerian Institution, with Upper Credit Division in Architecture or any discipline in the Environmental Design and Management fields.
  4. All applicants shall normally possess a minimum of Third Class Degree or HND (Upper Credit) to be eligible for admission. 
  5. In special cases, applicants with HND (Lower Credit) may be considered upon satisfactorily passing a prescribed examination by the Department.
  6. Pass an admission test after submitting the application form.

No you do not. But if you do not have any drawing skills, you will need to take adrawing course for 3 weeks before the first semester begins. This will be at an additional cost as stipulated in the optional fees. It will be taught virtually.

No working experience is required for those with undergraduate degrees in Architecture or Environmental Design disciplines. However, a minimum of three years working experience as an interior designer is required for applicants who do not have degrees in Architecture or Environmental Design disciplines.

All international students and all those who completed their higher education outside Nigeria, would require  their credentials evaluated and sent by the evaluators to. mid@oaucdl.edu.ng

For  the  International Credential Evaluation, a University official or testing center must submit your official documents (transcripts, mark sheets, certificates, examination results, etc.) directly to the evaluation provider.

The evaluations must be sent to The Executive Masters in Interior Design (mid@oaucdl.edu.ng) directly from any of the services listed below.  Please note that evaluations sent directly by applicants are not accepted.

All international students and those who completed their higher education outside Nigeria, would require the following additional documents:

  • International Credential Evaluation.
  • IELTS or TOEFL results (not older than 3 years) is required for those who completed their higher education in non-English speaking countries.

After submitting your application, you will receive a mail which will request you to schedule a suitable date for your admission test. You will obtain your test results within 48 hrs.

You will need to submit your Bachelors transcript or your HND transcript. You may upload additional transcripts for other higher degrees if necessary.

Letters of recommendation are required for applicants without a design related background. One of the letters must be written by one boss who you have worked with. Any other person who can properly assess your capabilities may write the other letter.

Letters of recommendation should be uploaded during the process of application.

There is administrative support for all students who are unable to personally process their documents. The names and numbers are found in the Contact us section of the website.

You will need to own a laptop/computer with appropriate specifications for 3D modelling. You will also need access to zoom, a very good internet access, as well as a 3D design modelling software.

The student will be given access and links of books, e-books, videos and links to resources to facilitate his/her learning for the different courses.

The programme is designed with the working professional in mind. It is designed as a hybrid course: this means that it will be both online and face-face. Most (75%) of the lectures will be offered online each semester. There will be one physical meeting per semester which will last 4 days each. The physical meetings include field trips to factories, showrooms, design offices, building sites and lectures/workshops.

No, the programme is not self-paced. All students move together as a cohort.

The student should keep Fridays and Saturdays free for lectures. Online lectures will be held every Friday and Saturday. Lectures are delivered both synchronously and asynchronously.

For Hybrid students, physical meetings will be held once a semester. Each Semester’s timetable will be made available to the student at least a week to the beginning of each semester.

For International students, virtual fieldfield trips and workshops will be held at scheduled times.

For Hybrid mode students, the face-face meetings will be held in Lagos mainland (and in Abuja if the number of students in Abuja is more than ten). The venue will be communicated to all admitted students. 

The student will be given access and links of books, e-books, videos and links to resources to facilitate his/her learning for the different courses.

Continuous assessment is the main means of assessment in the program.  This will be done through projects, tests, quizzes, discussions, class presentations and attendance. It is important that students do not have less than 75% attendance in online classes and 75% attendance in face-face meetings. Attendance is HIGHLY important. In order to be eligible to sit for an examination or pass in each course, the student must not have less than 75% attendance in the physical meetings  and in the online classes.

The program runs for 3 semesters. Each semester lasts 16 weeks.

In each semester, the program runs in modules; four modules in the first semester; five modules in the second semester; one module and the final project in the third semester.

The course is very practical, interactive, skills development and project based.

 Projects and field trips are key components of the program.

Teamwork is also introduced in the studio and other assignments.

It is expected that at the end of the programme, you will demonstrate a rich comprehension of the history, design, theories, procedures, ethics and issues in the design and construction of a variety of interior spaces. 

You will also possess the ability to identify key problems in interiors and apply knowledge learnt in the programme to design and create interior spaces for human performance and wellbeing. 

Finally, you will demonstrate professionalism in all issues associated with the design of interior environments and be able to work independently and in teams.

Tutors also include Professional Interior Designers from Nigeria, USA, South Africa and Saudi Arabia.

All tutors have 10-35 years experience in the areas of their expertise.

Fees are subject to change annually

The fees that a student will pay are the fees stipulated in the tuition and fees section. It is binding on the student and the programme for the session. However, there might be a slight change based on the inflation rate in the country at the beginning of every new session.

Students who fail less than 2 modules are expected to receive tutorials and repeat the assignments and tests.

Every applicant is expected to take the Admission Test The purpose is to identify whether the candidate is qualified and fit for admission and if so, the additional academic support which the candidate may need during the program.

All students who are not proficient in 3D modelling are expected to register for the training. The software to be used is Coohom. The training fee includes the subscription for the software for one month which is the duration of the training.

 The student will have to subscribe for this software personally. However, a highly discounted price is available through this program. Extra personal training support is available at an extra fee.

The Instalments Payment Plan allows a student to pay the semester’s tuition in three (3) installments as detailed in the DEADLINES FOR PAYMENT in the tuition and fees section.

All admitted students are eligible for this Instalments payment plan. If a student does not pay full fees by the resumption deadline, it is assumed that the student is opting for the Instalments payment plan.

 If the Instalments payment plan option is selected, a N20,000 fee (for hybrid students) or $50 (for International students) is added to the first installment to offset administrative costs.

Normally, for each semester, the three(3) installment payments are due a few days before resumption, 30 days and 60 days into the semester, respectively.

Failure to make the installments as agreed will result in additional N5,000 (hybrid) or $20 (International) per day for a maximum of one week; after which the candidate may wish to apply for leave of absence or withdrawal.

To be eligible for the award of a Masters degree in Interior Design all students are expected to have passed all the courses with a minimum of 50% in each course. If the student gets less than 50% in one or two courses, He will have to repeat these courses in the make -up time or in the next available semesters.

If however, the student fails more than two courses in a semester, the student will be required to repeat the semester. If the student fails to repeat the failed semester, the student will be withdrawn from the programme.

If successful, the student will be awarded a Masters’ certificate of the Obafemi Awolowo University. The certificate will read ‘Master of Interior Design, Obafemi Awolowo University’. The degree you receive will be identical to one earned in a face-face program. There will not be an “online” designation on certificates awarded to students who completed their degree program online.

“Graduation” will occur after a student has satisfied all of the academic requirements of this program and the Senate has approved the results..

The graduation ceremony takes place every December. The students will be notified of the graduation ceremony dates.

Graduation takes place physically on the campus.

Attendance is not compulsory. However, if a student is unable to attend the graduation ceremony, you may still have to pay the ceremony fees in order to collect your certificate.

Yes. A student who completes the programme will have the skills required to practice as an interior designer. The student will be able to

  • Produce interior designs drawings using AI based 3D software
  • Analyze and Design Interior lighting for spaces 
  • Analyze the quality of any interior Design project
  • Communicate concepts and design solutions for interior projects.
  • Design any interior space like a professional interior designer.
  • Use colour to create a variety of interior experiences
  • Relate professionally with clients, vendors and other building professionals.

Fully Online format

(International students)

The desires and needs of our international students are deeply valued and it is accounted for in the program. It’s our goal to provide you with the support and assistance you need to succeed and have the best experience ever.

Mode of study: Online

The program is fully virtual. The student has an option of joining virtually and also accessing materials online at a convenient time. Lectures are held on scheduled Fridays and Saturdays during each semester.

Entry Requirements

Every applicant must have a Bachelors Degree from an accredited university and the discipline of study should be related to design fields of Architecture or Construction or the Built Environment.

If the candidates previous discipline is not in a design related field, then the candidate should have a minimum of three years work experience in a design related firm and he/she would also be assessed and testes before the program begins.

Candidates must prove proficiency in English.

The Candidates credentials will be verified using a third party organization. The candidate will be requested to pay for this verification.

Admissions Requirements

High School Certificate showing 

  1. Four years Math 
  2. Four years English 
  3. Three years sciences (3 years each of at least two of the following subjects: biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences or physics)
  4. Two years of at least one social sciences subject
  5. Two years of any arts/humanities subject.
  6. These subjects must be passed with a score of 50% and above

Bachelor’s degree from  Architecture or  Design or  Construction Disciplines

From an accredited 4-year university. Minimum GPA is 2.5 out of 4

PLUS

Proficiency in English Test (IELTS/TOEFL)

A minimum score of 80 for TOEFL and 6.0 for IELTS

Bachelor’s degree from  any University/or College Discipline
